In the apostolic nunciature in Spain faced a change of cycle. The departure of the now cardinal Federico Tedeschini put an end to a period of representation that began in still during the pontificate of Benedict XV. The end of the stage also coincided with the victory of the Popular Front in the February elections and with the crisis of Catholic possibilism after the defeat. But it was not the only change.
The representation's auditor Tito Crespi committed suicide in April. He did it CXB Directory while he was going to Rome by boat to recover from a severe depressive disorder. This caused Silvio Sericano to be assigned to the Madrid nunciature. That arrival was the first of the provisionalities that marked the representation of the Pope in Spain during the Civil War as I have studied in the book The Holy See and the Civil War .
At the Sericano stage
Shortly after Crespi's suicide in June Tedeschini left for Rome permanently. The nunciature was then in the hands of Sericano as provisional chargé d'affaires. His role was to maintain the representation while awaiting the arrival of the new nuncio Filippo Cortesi.
During the period between Tedeschini's departure and the July coup d'état Sericano demonstrated great skill in defending the rights of Catholics using the democratic legal system of the Second Republic in an example of the trend that The Holy See seemed to want to impress the new period of its relations with the Spanish government.
